Ghost rice cake pounding to ward off evil spirits

03 Feb 2025

Aiai Bridge

It started in 1987 as a personal event by the owner and customers of the Shunho Building to ward off bad luck.
Similar to the bean-throwing and sushi-rolling at home on Setsubun, this is a small but meaningful local festival to pray for the safety of the household, good fortune, and business prosperity.
Every year, the pounded mochi is made into red bean mochi, kinako mochi, zenzai, and other dishes, and barrels of sake are also served.
Although Setsubun is often very cold, and snow often falls on some days, the number of people bringing children has increased, and in recent years, many foreign tourists have come to visit, making it a very popular event.
The biggest attraction of this "mochi-pounding to ward off bad luck" is the traditional custom of the geisha district (= the entertainment district) of welcoming visitors with "ghost makeup."
Commemorative photos are taken all over the venue for foreign visitors, mainly foreign tourists.
