YAMATO S.Q. was formed in 1994 and began its activities with a winning record of awards, including the Matsuo Academic Foundation's Special Grant, the Grand Prix at the Omagari City Newcomer Music Festival in Akita Prefecture, and a selection for the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. In 2024, it celebrated its 30th anniversary.

After experiencing the 10th anniversary concert of JYACMS, the Risonare Music Festival, the NHK-FM recital, and the Nippon Broadcasting System public recording "Nippon Steel Concert," the quartet established its individuality as a string quartet with a clear tone and huge resonance. With the world premiere recording of the CD "Yamada Kosaku Complete Chamber Music" and Hajime Komatsu's "Complete Collection of Japanese Folk Songs," the quartet became known as specialists in Japanese music.

In recent years, armed with Kazuaki Kondo's arrangements, the quartet has been working on projects that break down the barriers of genre, including a vast number of works by Piazzolla and film scores such as "The Pink Panther" and "Himawari."

In particular, their programs that feature rock classics such as Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin match the unique playing style of violinist Yasunao Ishida, and continue to open up a new world of string quartets.
