Special Exhibition: 100 Years After His Death, Tessai Tomioka's "Giving a Hundred Fans to You" - Giving a Hundred Fans to You -
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Tomioka Tessai, known as the "last literati painter," was born in Kyoto in 1836 (Tenpo 7). A "literati" is someone who is involved in academics and is good at poetry, calligraphy, and painting, and "literati painting" (Nanga) refers to calligraphy and paintings that literati create as a side job. Tessai, who was self-taught in both academics and painting, left behind many original calligraphy and paintings until his death at the age of 89 in 1924 (Taisho 13). This year marks the 100th anniversary of Tessai's death.
In 1909 (Meiji 42), Tessai exhibited "Landscape Landscape" at the "Contemporary Masters' 100 Scrolls Exhibition" held by Takashimaya in its Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo stores. This was a major opportunity for Tessai, who was a departure from the art world at the time, to become known to the world. Two years later, Takashimaya established an art department and held Tessai's first solo exhibition in 1913 (Taisho 2). Exhibitions organized by the Takashimaya Art Department featured new works that Tessai had freely drawn on his brush, and his popularity spread throughout the country. In his later years, he held solo exhibitions only at Takashimaya and produced commemorative art books, so much so that he was known to the public as "Tessai of Takashimaya."
Takashimaya Historical Museum has works related to Tessai. "Gift to the Master: 100 Fans" is a collection of 100 fans that Tessai continued to give to his friends over the years. This exhibition will display all 100 fans that Tessai painted with pleasure, depicting landscapes, flowers and birds, and people, all of which he painted as his inspiration dictated. Enjoy the 100 stories that the master Tessai painted on the surfaces of his fans.
